Description

Thiophanate-methyl is a highly effective active ingredient belonging to the benzimidazole chemical class. It is widely used as a systemic fungicide with both curative and preventive properties. The substance has a unique ability to penetrate plant tissues rapidly and redistribute systemically, ensuring that even parts of the plant not directly hit by the spray solution receive adequate protection.

The mechanism of action involves the inhibition of cell division processes in the pathogen. The substance interferes with the synthesis of beta-tubulin, which disrupts the normal mitotic division of fungal cell nuclei. Consequently, the metabolic activity of pathogenic fungi is completely halted, mycelium growth is arrested, and the infection is managed effectively in its early stages.

This compound is used on a wide range of crops, including cereals, sugar beets, orchards, vineyards, and vegetables. It is highly effective against various serious diseases such as powdery mildew, leaf spot (Cercospora), scab, gray mold, Fusarium, and various root rot complexes. Its systemic properties make it an excellent choice for disease management in conditions of moderate humidity.

Application strategies must include the rotation of this substance with fungicides from different chemical classes. This is a critical requirement, as many pathogens can develop resistance to benzimidazoles if the same active ingredient is applied repeatedly on the same field. The optimal timing for application is at the first sign of symptoms or when environmental conditions are conducive to disease outbreaks.

Safety precautions must be strictly followed according to regional regulations when handling Thiophanate-methyl. When preparing the spray solution or applying the product, operators must use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) for skin, respiratory, and eye protection. The substance is moderately toxic to bees and aquatic organisms; therefore, spray drift onto flowering plants and water bodies must be avoided.
