Tobacco mosaic virus
Description
Tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) is a highly infectious plant pathogen that affects a wide range of plants, especially tobacco and other members of the Solanaceae family. It is one of the most studied plant viruses and remains a significant economic burden for farmers globally, particularly in greenhouse operations where it can spread rapidly.
The virus is characterized by its remarkable stability and resilience. It can persist in dead plant material, contaminated soil, and on farming tools for years. It does not require a biological vector like an insect to spread; instead, it is primarily transmitted through mechanical contact, making human intervention in the field the most common way for the virus to enter the crop system.
The mechanism of TMV involves hijacking the host plant's cellular machinery to replicate its RNA. Once inside the plant cells, it disrupts photosynthesis and metabolic processes. Symptoms typically manifest as a mosaic pattern of light and dark green patches on the leaves, leaf curling, stunted plant growth, and distorted fruit, all of which lead to severe reductions in yield and market value.
Crop susceptibility is highest in tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants. Because there are no chemical virucides that can effectively "cure" an infected plant, the focus in agronomy is strictly on prevention and biological management. Early detection and the removal of infected plants are essential to mitigate the spread within a crop population.
Management strategies rely heavily on sanitation and genetic resistance. Farmers are encouraged to use resistant cultivars, which are often labeled with a "Tm" resistance code. Strict hygiene practices, such as washing hands with soap and water or milk, and disinfecting tools with trisodium phosphate, are critical. In some systems, inoculation with a mild strain of the virus is used as a preventive vaccination to protect crops from more virulent wild-type strains.
