Tricyclazole

Tricyclazole is a systemic fungicide belonging to the triazolobenzothiazole chemical class. It is primarily developed and utilized as a highly effective agent for controlling rice blast disease, caused by the fungus Magnaporthe grisea, which is one of the most destructive diseases in global rice production.

The mode of action of tricyclazole is highly specific: it inhibits the biosynthesis of melanin in the fungal cell. Melanin is essential for the formation and function of appressoria, the specialized infection structures that the fungus uses to penetrate the rice plant's leaf surface. By preventing melanin production, the fungicide effectively prevents the fungus from infecting the host tissue.

It is specifically applied to rice crops to manage outbreaks of rice blast. Because of its systemic properties, tricyclazole is absorbed by the roots or leaves and translocated throughout the plant. This characteristic allows for both prophylactic and curative activity, providing long-lasting protection even as the plant continues to grow.

Effective application requires strategic timing, typically before the onset of visible symptoms or at the very early stages of disease development. It is often used in regions with high humidity where rice blast pressure is persistent. The substance is known for its excellent resistance to wash-off, which ensures high performance even under intense tropical or irrigation conditions.

Safety and handling are paramount when using this fungicide. Operators must wear appropriate protective clothing to avoid skin and eye contact. It is essential to manage drift and runoff to protect local aquatic ecosystems, as tricyclazole can be toxic to aquatic organisms. Always follow the specific pre-harvest interval (PHI) indicated on the product label to ensure food safety.
