Validamycin

Validamycin is an antibiotic fungicide produced through the fermentation process of the bacterium Streptomyces hygroscopicus. Chemically, it belongs to the aminoglycoside group. It is widely used in global agriculture for its specific inhibitory effect on various phytopathogenic fungi, providing reliable protection for staple food crops.

The primary mode of action is the inhibition of the enzyme trehalase in pathogenic fungi. By interfering with trehalose metabolism, validamycin effectively disrupts the growth and development of the fungal mycelium. This targeted action prevents the pathogen from expanding its colonization within the host plant tissue, effectively halting the progress of the infection.

Validamycin is predominantly applied in rice cultivation to manage sheath blight caused by Rhizoctonia solani. Additionally, it is utilized on a variety of other crops, including vegetables and potatoes, to combat soil-borne diseases such as root rot and damping-off caused by fungi of the Rhizoctonia and Sclerotium genera.

Proper application is essential for optimal results. The fungicide is typically applied as a foliar spray or soil drench depending on the target disease. Because it acts primarily via contact and has limited systemic movement, thorough coverage of the plant canopy is crucial to prevent the spread of fungal lesions during humid conditions conducive to disease outbreaks.
