Acetic acid

Description

Acetic acid is utilized in agriculture primarily as a non-selective, contact-acting herbicide. It is a naturally occurring compound that serves as a popular alternative for weed control in organic farming systems, where synthetic herbicides are restricted. Its rapid degradation in the environment makes it an environmentally friendly option for specific tasks.

The mechanism of action involves the rapid disruption of plant cell membranes and the dissolution of the protective waxy cuticle layer. Upon contact, the acid causes immediate desiccation of the green tissue, leading to wilting and death of the plant within a few hours. Since it is not systemic, it does not translocate, meaning roots of perennial weeds may survive and regrow.

This substance is effectively used for spot treatments in vegetable gardens, vineyards, and orchards to eliminate early-stage annual weeds. It is most efficient when applied to young, succulent weed growth. Effective control depends heavily on the concentration of the solution and the uniformity of coverage during application.

Application requirements emphasize that the treatment should be performed under warm, sunny conditions, as temperature and solar radiation accelerate the herbicidal activity. Because it is non-selective, caution must be taken to prevent drift onto crop plants, as it will cause localized necrosis wherever it touches leaf surface or green stems.

Safety precautions are essential when handling concentrated acetic acid to avoid injuries.

  • Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment, including chemical-resistant gloves and goggles.
  • Ensure that the spray equipment is compatible with acidic solutions to prevent corrosion.
  • Do not apply during high wind to protect adjacent crops.
  • Store the product in a cool, well-ventilated area away from incompatible substances.
