Whey

Description

Whey is a byproduct of the dairy industry that is increasingly utilized in organic agriculture as a natural fungicide and biostimulant. It is a complex mixture containing proteins, lactose, lactic acid, and various minerals, which provide both protective and nutritional benefits to plants when applied correctly.

The mechanism of action of whey as a plant protection agent is primarily based on its physical and chemical properties. When sprayed on foliage, it creates a proteinaceous film that acts as a barrier, inhibiting the germination of fungal spores. Additionally, the acidic pH of the whey creates an inhospitable environment for various fungal pathogens, effectively suppressing their spread.

This substance is most commonly used to combat powdery mildew on various crops, including cucumbers, zucchini, squashes, grapes, and various ornamental plants. By applying whey regularly, farmers can reduce the incidence of fungal infections and simultaneously provide a light foliar feeding that supports overall plant vitality during the growing season.

Application requires proper dilution with water, typically at a ratio of 1:10. To ensure the solution adheres well to the leaves, the addition of a small amount of mild soap or a natural surfactant is recommended. It is essential to achieve thorough coverage of both the upper and lower leaf surfaces, as the protective film must be intact to be fully effective.

  • Avoid application in direct, intense sunlight to prevent leaf scorch.
  • Ensure equipment is thoroughly cleaned after use to prevent bacterial buildup.
  • Monitor plants for sensitivity, especially when using higher concentrations.
  • Apply repeatedly every 7–10 days during periods of high disease pressure.

Safety and precautionary measures should be prioritized despite the natural origin of the product. High concentrations or excessive frequency of use can lead to environmental buildup on the leaf surface, which may attract unintended secondary pests or mold if ventilation is poor. Always test the solution on a small portion of the crop before full-scale application.
