Willow bark and stem extract
Description
Willow bark and stem extract is a potent plant-derived biostimulant and bio-fungicide extracted from various Salix species. Within modern plant protection, it is classified as an elicitor of systemic resistance, widely utilized in organic and sustainable farming practices to enhance the natural defense mechanisms of crops against biotic and abiotic stressors.
The primary mechanism of action is based on the presence of salicin, a natural precursor to salicylic acid. When applied to plants, it triggers the Systemic Acquired Resistance (SAR) pathway. This biochemical cascade alerts the plant's defense systems to produce pathogen-related proteins, reinforce cell walls, and generate reactive oxygen species to neutralize invading fungi or bacteria.
This extract is applied to a broad range of crops, including fruits, vegetables, and cereals, specifically targeting diseases like powdery mildew, scab, and various root pathogens. Beyond its fungistatic properties, the extract acts as a growth regulator, specifically improving root development and overall plant vigor, which is particularly beneficial during the establishment phase.
Application strategies focus on preventive measures. Because the substance acts as an immune primer, applying the extract before infection pressure builds up is critical for success. It is highly compatible with other biological control agents, allowing it to fit seamlessly into Integrated Pest Management (IPM) protocols without causing environmental harm.
- Enhanced systemic immunity.
- Increased tolerance to environmental stress.
- Improved root system development.
- Safe for beneficial insects and pollinators.
Safety precautions during handling are minimal given its organic nature, yet protective gloves and goggles are recommended during concentrated product mixing to prevent irritation. Storage should be in a cool, dark location, as UV exposure and high temperatures can compromise the integrity of the bioactive phenolic compounds found in the extract.
