Plant antioxidant system

This is a complex set of enzymatic and non-enzymatic defensive mechanisms that neutralize reactive oxygen species to protect plant cells from environmental stress.

Также говорят: antioxidant defense system, enzymatic antioxidant mechanism, cellular redox regulation

The antioxidant system acts as a primary internal safeguard against abiotic stresses such as drought, extreme temperatures, and salinity. By maintaining cellular redox homeostasis, it ensures that metabolic pathways continue to function despite adverse environmental conditions.

In agricultural practice, producers use biostimulants, amino acids, and specific micronutrients to enhance these internal systems. Applications are most effective when timed just before or immediately after a stress event occurs, helping the crop transition through difficult physiological phases without significant yield loss.

A common mistake is overloading the plant with nitrogen-heavy fertilizers during a stress period, which creates further oxidative pressure. Furthermore, relying on antioxidant treatments as a cure for already necrotic tissue is ineffective, as the systemic defense requires living cells to be functional.
