Bioavailability

Bioavailability is the proportion of a nutrient or chemical that is absorbed by a plant and is available for physiological utilization.

Также говорят: nutrient availability, plant-available fraction

In agronomy, bioavailability determines how efficiently plants convert applied fertilizers into actual biomass. Simply applying a nutrient to the soil does not guarantee uptake, as physical and chemical properties of the soil often lock elements into immobile states.

Agronomists manage bioavailability by adjusting soil pH, ensuring adequate moisture levels, and applying specialized formulations such as chelates or surfactants to improve nutrient transition. This approach helps in optimizing dosage and minimizing nutrient leaching or fixation.

A common mistake is applying fertilizers without analyzing soil chemistry first. This leads to the misuse of inputs where nutrients compete for uptake sites, resulting in imbalances and reduced yield despite high application rates.
