Coenosis

Coenosis is a grouping of living organisms inhabiting a specific environment and interacting with each other and their surroundings.

Также говорят: biocoenosis, agrocoenosis, biotic community

In agronomy, the term is typically applied as agrocoenosis, an artificial ecosystem managed by farmers to produce crops. Understanding the composition of the coenosis helps in monitoring the balance between beneficial insects, pollinators, and potential pests.

This concept is vital when designing crop rotations or implementing intercropping strategies. By fostering a diverse coenosis, a grower can naturally suppress weeds and diseases, reducing the reliance on external chemical inputs.

A common mistake is the indiscriminate use of broad-spectrum pesticides, which disrupt the natural dynamics of the coenosis. This destruction of beneficial trophic links often leads to secondary pest outbreaks that are difficult to manage without repeated interventions.
