Differentiation of the growing point

A biological process where undifferentiated cells at the plant's shoot apical meristem develop into specific organs like leaves, stems, or reproductive spikelet primordia.

Также говорят: shoot apex differentiation, organogenesis

This developmental stage is a critical period for determining yield potential in cereal crops. During this time, the number of spikelets is determined, making the plant highly sensitive to environmental stressors and nutrient availability.

Agronomists monitor this stage to time nitrogen fertilizer applications accurately. Targeted nutrition during the transition from tillering to jointing helps prevent the abortion of developing spikelets and ensures optimal grain set.

A common error is applying fertilizers too late, when the spikelet architecture is already fixed and nutrient uptake efficiency decreases. Furthermore, it is essential to avoid chemical stress or drought during this phase, as these factors can irreversibly reduce the total number of grain sites.
