Potassium fixation

The process where potassium ions are trapped within the lattice structure of clay minerals, rendering them unavailable for plant uptake.

Potassium fixation occurs primarily in soils rich in 2:1 clay minerals like illite or vermiculite. These minerals trap potassium ions within their interlayer spaces, effectively removing them from the soil solution where they would otherwise be accessible to plant roots.

This process is highly dynamic and is accelerated by wetting and drying cycles in the soil profile. To manage this, agronomists often utilize band placement of fertilizers, which saturates specific soil zones and reduces the overall volume of soil that can actively fix the applied potassium.

A common management error is failing to account for soil mineralogy when calculating fertilizer requirements. In highly fixative soils, it is necessary to apply higher rates of potassium or utilize split applications to ensure that sufficient nutrient levels remain available to crops throughout the critical stages of development.
