Heterosis (hybrid vigor)

The phenomenon where the progeny of genetically diverse parents exhibit superior traits, such as growth rate and yield, compared to either parent.

Также говорят: Heterosis, hybrid vigor

Hybrid vigor is widely utilized in commercial farming to maximize yields in crops like maize and sorghum. By crossing two genetically distinct inbred lines, the resulting F1 progeny benefits from masked deleterious recessive alleles and increased metabolic efficiency, leading to robust development and improved stress tolerance.

The primary application is strictly restricted to F1 seeds. A common error is attempting to save and replant seeds from an F1 crop, which results in genetic segregation, loss of uniformity, and a significant drop in yield potential. Consistent use of certified hybrid seed is essential for maintaining the intended productivity gains.
