Inbred lines are the essential building blocks of modern hybrid breeding. By consistently selfing plants, breeders achieve homozygosity, which reveals hidden genetic traits and allows for the elimination of undesirable characteristics.
These lines are utilized as parental stock to produce F1 hybrids. The resulting progeny benefit from heterosis, or hybrid vigor, which typically manifests as significantly higher yields, uniform maturity, and improved resistance to environmental stressors compared to the parents.
