Tillering
Tillering is the development of lateral shoots from the base of cereal plants, increasing the total number of stems per plant.

Tillering is a critical stage in the growth of cereals, as it determines the final number of productive tillers that will eventually bear grain. The process is heavily influenced by environmental conditions, including light intensity, temperature, and nutrient availability.
In agricultural practice, nitrogen fertilization is often adjusted during this phase to support or limit tillering depending on the desired plant density. Farmers monitor tillering to prevent excessive stem formation, which can lead to light competition and increased susceptibility to lodging.
A common error is poor management of planting depth or seed rate, which interferes with the development of the crown node. Insufficient moisture during this stage is another frequent cause of reduced tiller survival and lower yield potential.
