The primary function of a cultipacker is to prepare an ideal seedbed by pressing seeds into the soil and removing large air pockets. This process encourages moisture movement from deeper soil layers to the seed zone, which is essential for uniform germination, especially in dry conditions. It also creates a smooth surface for efficient harvesting.
Packing can be performed either before sowing to create a firm surface or immediately after to lock in moisture and protect seeds from erosion. It is particularly beneficial for small-seeded crops. Operators must carefully monitor soil moisture levels, as using heavy equipment on wet soil can damage the soil structure and lead to severe compaction.
A common error is operating at the wrong soil moisture level. Working on overly wet ground leads to surface crusting, which acts as a barrier to emerging sprouts. Conversely, excessive packing in very dry conditions without proper timing may increase evaporation rates, defeating the purpose of the operation.
