Austrian cow parsnip

Austrian cow parsnip (Heracleum austriacum) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Apiaceae family. Within agricultural systems, it is classified as a troublesome weed that can negatively impact the yield and quality of grazing lands and meadows. Although not as globally aggressive as some of its relatives, it remains a significant concern for land management in its native and colonized regions.

This species primarily thrives in nutrient-rich soils with sufficient moisture levels. It is frequently found in alpine meadows, pastures, and fields adjacent to forests. In agroecosystems, it invades perennial grass stands and fallow lands, where it outcompetes desirable plant species for light, nutrients, and water, ultimately reducing the overall productivity of the land.

The biology of the plant is defined by a strong taproot and a large rosette of leaves that emerges in the early spring. It propagates primarily through seeds that can persist in the soil for several years. The plant typically requires two or more years to reach the reproductive stage, during which it produces large umbels capable of distributing a vast quantity of seeds via wind and water dispersal.

The economic harm caused by this weed involves a reduction in forage quality for livestock. Furthermore, like many species in the genus Heracleum, the plant contains phototoxic substances that can cause skin reactions upon contact. The presence of these weeds complicates farm management and necessitates additional labor to ensure the safety of both workers and livestock on the affected fields.

Control measures require a multi-faceted strategy to prevent spreading and minimize field populations:

• Frequent mowing before flowering to starve the root system of energy reserves.
• Mechanical removal through deep plowing to damage the main taproot.
• Application of systemic herbicides on non-cropped areas to eradicate established populations.
• Maintaining a healthy and dense canopy of competitive grasses to suppress seed germination.
