Box-leaved honeysuckle

Box-leaved honeysuckle (Lonicera pileata) is a semi-evergreen ornamental shrub belonging to the Caprifoliaceae family. It is highly valued in horticulture for its dense, spreading habit and its ability to act as an effective ground cover or low-growing hedge, providing year-round structural interest in garden beds.

Originating from Western and Central China, this plant has become a staple in temperate landscaping across the globe. It thrives in diverse environments, provided it is protected from harsh, drying winds and extreme frost, which can damage its foliage during particularly severe winters.

Botanically, the plant is characterized by its stiff, horizontal branches and small, glossy, deep green leaves. In late spring, it produces inconspicuous, fragrant pale yellow flowers. These are followed by translucent, violet-blue berries. While visually appealing, the berries are not edible and should be handled with care if pets or children are present.

Cultivation requirements for Lonicera pileata include well-draining, moderately fertile soil and a position in full sun or partial shade. While it is relatively low-maintenance, young plants should be mulched in the autumn to protect the root system from freezing, and moisture levels should be monitored during the first few growing seasons.
