Wood small-reed (latin: Calamagrostis epigejos) is a perennial grass species belonging to the Poaceae (grass) family. This species is known for its remarkable ability to colonize a variety of environments, making it a prominent and highly competitive grass throughout temperate Eurasia.

The plant is native to a broad geographical range, spanning from Europe to East Asia. It naturally thrives in diverse habitats such as forests, open scrublands, sandy dunes, and along riverbanks. Due to its aggressive growth habits, it is often classified as a problematic weed in agricultural settings where it can invade meadows and fallow lands rapidly.

Botanically, the species is characterized by long, creeping rhizomes and erect, rigid stems that can grow up to 150 cm in height. Its leaves are narrow, rough-textured, and possess a distinct bluish-green color. The inflorescence is a dense, panicle-like structure that turns into a plume-like appearance, which is visually striking during the late summer flowering stage.

Regarding agricultural requirements, the wood small-reed is highly adaptable. It flourishes in nutrient-poor and sandy soils where other crops struggle to survive. Effective management often requires a combination of physical suppression, such as deep plowing to disrupt the rhizome network, and the judicious use of herbicides to prevent the encroachment of the grass into productive agricultural areas.

Economically, while it is generally avoided as a fodder crop due to its coarse texture and low nutritional value, it serves ecological functions. It is highly effective for soil stabilization and controlling wind erosion in arid or disturbed areas. In some contexts, it is used in ornamental gardening for its structured, aesthetic presence, although care must be taken to prevent its invasive spread.
