It is widely recognized by horticulturists for its unique structural adaptation: the formation of two distinct types of fronds. One type is a sterile, oak-leaf-shaped frond that forms a basket-like structure around the rhizome to trap debris and nutrients.
The native range of this plant extends across the tropical regions of Southeast Asia, including India, China, and parts of the Malay Peninsula. It thrives in humid forest environments, growing predominantly as an epiphyte on tree trunks or branches, as well as occasionally on rocky substrates where moisture availability is constant.
Botanically, the plant is characterized by its thick, creeping rhizomes and large, pinnate fronds. The sterile leaves eventually turn brown and leathery, providing a natural mulch layer that collects organic material. This biological strategy allows the fern to thrive in nutrient-poor canopy environments by creating its own micro-environment and moisture retention system.
For successful cultivation, Drynaria coronans requires a well-draining, loose substrate, typically comprised of orchid bark, moss, and charcoal. It demands high relative humidity and consistent temperatures between 20°C and 25°C. Direct sunlight should be avoided as it can scorch the delicate foliage; instead, bright, indirect light is essential for optimal growth.
