Grape-leaf anemone

Eriocapitella vitifolia, commonly known as the grape-leaf anemone, is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Ranunculaceae family. It is highly valued in horticulture for its foliage, which bears a striking resemblance to grape leaves, and its elegant, late-blooming flowers that bring life to the garden in autumn.

The plant originates from the mountainous regions of the Himalayas and parts of China. In its native habitat, it grows in cool, moist, and shaded environments. Today, it is widely cultivated in temperate regions as a prized ornamental perennial for shaded borders and woodland-style garden settings.

Botanically, this species is characterized by its robust rhizomes and large, palmately-lobed leaves that are often felted or hairy on the underside. The flowering stalks rise well above the basal foliage, producing delicate white or pale pink flowers with prominent central stamens. The plants are generally clump-forming, slowly expanding over time.

Cultivation requirements include a location in partial to full shade with protection from strong, drying winds. The soil should be fertile, moisture-retentive, yet well-drained, enriched with organic matter. Proper maintenance involves regular watering during dry spells and applying mulch to the roots to preserve moisture and provide insulation during colder months.
