Description
Escallonia exoniensis is a versatile, semi-evergreen to evergreen shrub belonging to the family Escalloniaceae. This plant is a well-known hybrid, resulting from the cross between E. rosea and E. rubra. It is widely recognized in horticulture for its dense, glossy foliage and its ability to produce masses of attractive, tubular flowers throughout the summer months.
Morphologically, the shrub features slender, arching branches that can reach significant heights, often used for screening. The leaves are small, serrated, and deep green, providing a lush backdrop for the floral display. The flowers, typically appearing in shades of pink, grow in terminal panicles, attracting various pollinators to the garden environment.
Regarding climate, Escallonia exoniensis thrives best in temperate regions with mild winters. It requires a sunny position, although it can tolerate partial shade in warmer climates. The soil must be fertile, moist, and possess excellent drainage; the plant does not tolerate waterlogging, which can cause significant stress to the root system during winter months.
