The plant is native to Europe and Western Asia, thriving naturally in damp meadows, riverbanks, and marshy woodland clearings. Due to its adaptability, it has become a staple for agricultural cultivation in temperate climates, specifically in areas where soil moisture is too high for conventional cereal crops.
