Arabian rockrose (Fumana arabica) is a perennial subshrub belonging to the Cistaceae family. While not a conventional staple crop, it is gaining recognition in specialized agriculture and xeriscaping for its ability to thrive in harsh, resource-poor environments where other decorative plants fail to survive.
The species originates from the Mediterranean basin, the Middle East, and parts of Northern Africa. It has evolved to adapt to arid landscapes, including rocky slopes, sandy plains, and limestone-rich terrains. Its geographical range signifies an inherent tolerance to intense heat and prolonged periods of drought, making it an excellent candidate for sustainable landscaping.
Botanically, the plant is characterized by a compact growth habit with woody stems at the base and thin, often pubescent leaves designed to minimize water loss.
