Cambridge geranium

Cambridge geranium (lat. Geranium x cantabrigiense) is a hybrid herbaceous perennial belonging to the Geraniaceae family. This specific cross, derived from Geranium dalmaticum and Geranium macrorrhizum, was developed in Cambridge and has become a staple in modern horticulture for its rugged durability and aesthetic appeal.

Botanically, this plant is characterized by its low-growing, spreading habit, typically reaching a height of 15–30 centimeters. It features aromatic, palmate leaves that form dense, evergreen mats, which can turn attractive shades of bronze or red during the winter months. Its small, saucer-shaped flowers appear in summer, providing a consistent and lush display.

Regarding climate requirements, the Cambridge geranium is exceptionally hardy and adaptable. It thrives in temperate regions, demonstrating high tolerance for both cold winters and occasional dry spells. While it prefers sunny to partially shaded positions, it remains flexible regarding soil quality, performing well in everything from average loam to rocky, poor, or sandy conditions.

Agronomic management of this species is relatively straightforward. Planting is best done in spring or autumn, with enough spacing to allow for its vigorous rhizomatous spread. While the plant is drought-tolerant once established, periodic watering during the first growing season is recommended. Minimal maintenance is required, usually limited to clearing away debris or trimming back spent flower stalks.

In terms of landscape and horticultural utility, it serves as an excellent ground cover that effectively competes with weeds. Because the plant contains essential oils, it is rarely bothered by pests or pathogens. It is considered a low-maintenance, reliable choice for rock gardens, container planting, and erosion control on slopes.
