Brochon's quillwort (Isoetes brochonii) is a rare aquatic plant species belonging to the family Isoetaceae. While not considered an agricultural crop in the traditional sense, it is of high scientific interest and serves as an important bioindicator for clean aquatic environments.

The origin of this species is linked to high-altitude mountain lake systems, primarily within the Pyrenees. Its distribution is highly localized, restricted to oligotrophic waters where competition from other aquatic plants is minimal due to specific chemical parameters of the substrate and water.

Botanically, it consists of a short, fleshy, corm-like stem with a dense tuft of quill-like leaves. It is a spore-bearing plant, with sporangia embedded at the base of the leaves. This unique morphology is adapted for photosynthesis in low-nutrient, high-oxygen water environments.

Regarding cultural requirements, it is not subject to standard agronomy. In experimental conservation contexts, success depends on maintaining stable, low-temperature water systems that mimic pristine mountain conditions. The plant is extremely sensitive to changes in nitrogen levels or sediment contamination.

There is no agricultural use for this plant. Its primary significance lies in its role in aquatic ecology and biodiversity preservation. Pest and disease pressures are minimal in their native high-altitude habitat; however, the primary threat remains environmental degradation and habitat loss due to climate change.
