Its appearance, consisting of a cluster of slender, quill-like leaves, makes it a distinct botanical subject, often favored by collectors of rare aquatic species.

The native range of this species is primarily focused on East Asia, including Japan, Korea, and parts of China. It typically inhabits shallow wetlands, pond margins, and the edges of streams where the substrate is submerged for most of the year. Due to habitat loss and environmental degradation, Isoetes japonica is recognized in many areas as a species of conservation concern, necessitating controlled propagation efforts.
