Tangier hawkbit, botanically identified as Leontodon tingitanus (often classified as Hedypnois rhagadioloides), is an annual herbaceous plant belonging to the Asteraceae family. This species is gaining interest in specific agricultural contexts due to its natural resilience and physiological adaptations to arid environments.
The plant originates from the Mediterranean region, with a significant presence in North Africa and parts of Southern Europe. Its natural habitat consists primarily of sandy soils, rocky slopes, and open fields, where it functions as an ephemeral plant, completing its life cycle rapidly before the onset of extreme heat.
Botanical characteristics include a rosette of basal leaves and solitary, bright yellow flower heads that attract various pollinators. The root system is primarily taprooted, enabling the plant to maintain growth even when surface soil moisture is significantly depleted, making it a robust species for dryland cultivation.
