Leucospermum

Leucospermum is an evergreen shrub belonging to the Proteaceae family. This specific crop is a hybrid derivative of Leucospermum cordifolium and Leucospermum patersonii. It is widely recognized for its striking flower heads that feature prominent, colorful styles, which is why it is commonly known as the pincushion protea. These plants are highly prized for their unique aesthetic value in both landscaping and international floriculture.

The plant originates from the southern regions of Africa, specifically the Cape Floristic Region. Today, it is cultivated commercially in climates that mirror its native habitat, such as South Africa, Australia, Israel, and parts of California. In non-Mediterranean climates, Leucospermum must be grown in specialized greenhouses or conservatories as it is highly sensitive to frost and cannot survive in open fields during winter months.

Botanically, the plant is characterized by leathery, serrated leaves and a robust root system capable of extracting nutrients from nutrient-poor soils. The flowers are technically complex inflorescences consisting of numerous tiny florets with elongated styles.
