Perez's sea lavender hybrid (Limonium perezii x L. sinuatum) is a deliberate cross between two popular ornamental species within the Plumbaginaceae family. This hybrid combines the striking color intensity and flower size of L. perezii with the resilience and structural properties of L. sinuatum, commonly known as statice.
Originally native to the Mediterranean basin and the Canary Islands, this plant has become a staple in commercial flower production. While it can act as a tender perennial in frost-free zones, it is most commonly cultivated as an annual or biennial crop in temperate regions to ensure optimal flower production during the warmer seasons.
Botanically, the plant develops a dense basal rosette of leaves and produces upright, branched stems. The inflorescences consist of small, papery flowers surrounded by vibrant, persistent calyces. This specific trait is what makes the plant highly valuable for the dried flower industry, as the calyces retain their color and shape long after the harvesting process.
Agricultural requirements for this hybrid focus on well-draining soil and full solar exposure. It thrives in slightly alkaline or neutral, sandy soil types. Growers must ensure excellent drainage, as the root system is highly susceptible to crown rot if exposed to waterlogged conditions.
