Interrupted clubmoss (Lycopodium annotinum) is a perennial, evergreen vascular plant belonging to the Lycopodiaceae family. It is characterized by creeping stems that spread across the forest floor, giving it a distinct moss-like appearance despite being a pteridophyte. This plant species plays a significant role in the ground cover of northern coniferous forests.

The geographic distribution of Lycopodium annotinum encompasses the circumboreal regions, including Canada, the United States, and Northern Europe. The plant is typically found in mature coniferous forests with moist, acidic soils and high shade levels. In an agricultural context, it is considered a wild crop that requires specific environmental conditions to thrive.

Botanically, the plant is identified by its stems that produce annual increments, separated by constrictions. The strobili, or spore-bearing cones, are sessile and borne at the tips of the upright branches. Regarding cultivation, interrupted clubmoss is highly demanding. It requires cool, humid climates and acidic soil conditions with plenty of organic matter. It is sensitive to direct sunlight and competition from faster-growing invasive plants. Proper agricultural management involves maintaining the integrity of the soil microbiome and forest canopy to support long-term plant health.

The primary economic value lies in its spores, which have been historically used in pharmaceutical dusting powders, veterinary medicine, and as a non-stick coating in metal casting. Despite these uses, commercial harvesting is strictly regulated in many regions to prevent depletion. Due to its slow growth rate, the species is generally managed as a wild-harvested resource rather than a cultivated field crop.
