Umbrella sedge

Umbrella sedge (Mariscus flabelliformis) is a prominent herbaceous perennial belonging to the Cyperaceae family. Often utilized in aquatic and semi-aquatic landscapes, this plant is recognized for its unique foliage arrangement where leaves radiate from the top of the stem in an umbrella-like fashion. It serves as an excellent structural plant for water gardens and moist borders.

Native to the tropical regions of Africa, this plant has adapted to diverse wetland habitats, including riverbanks, marshes, and floodplains. Cultivation requirements for this species are centered on soil moisture and temperature control. It thrives in rich, loamy, or organic-heavy soils that remain constantly wet. While it prefers full sun for optimal growth, it can tolerate partial shade.
