Pedicularis acaulis, known as the stemless lousewort, belongs to the Orobanchaceae family. It is a perennial herbaceous plant distinguished by its lack of a distinct stem, with its foliage forming a low-lying rosette close to the ground. Like most members of its genus, it is a hemiparasitic plant, meaning it derives nutrients from the roots of neighboring plants while retaining its own photosynthetic capabilities.
The plant originates from the mountainous regions of Europe, thriving in alpine meadows and rocky terrain. It is perfectly adapted to cold climates with short growing seasons and high humidity levels. In its natural habitat, it survives in thin, nutrient-poor soils by establishing parasitic connections with host species.
