As a facultative hemiparasite, it is capable of photosynthesis while simultaneously drawing nutrients and water from the root systems of host plants through specialized structures called haustoria.
The native distribution of this species is primarily focused on the mountainous regions of North America, including the Rocky Mountains. It thrives in subalpine and alpine meadows. While not a conventional agricultural crop, it plays a critical role in mountain ecosystem biodiversity and land restoration efforts.
Botanically, the plant is distinguished by its robust stem reaching heights of 60–80 cm and complex, fern-like leaves. Its defining feature is the prominent bracts that surround the inflorescence. The flowers are typically yellow or purple, arranged in dense spikes that provide significant nectar resources for alpine pollinators.
Cultivation requires replicating specific mountain conditions. The plant prefers cool climates, well-drained loamy soils, and a consistent but moderate moisture level.
