Purple cranesbill

Purple cranesbill (Geranium x magnificum) is a prominent herbaceous perennial belonging to the Geraniaceae family. This hybrid is highly regarded in horticulture for its exceptional vigor and stunning floral display. As a cross between Geranium ibericum and Geranium platypetalum, it combines the best aesthetic traits of its parents, making it a staple in temperate climate landscapes.

The plant grows in dense, upright mounds reaching 50 to 70 cm in height. Its foliage is characterized by deeply lobed, soft-hairy leaves that form a beautiful ground-covering carpet. During the autumn season, the leaves often turn attractive shades of orange and red, providing extended visual interest to the garden long after the primary blooming period has concluded.

Flowering occurs in early to mid-summer, featuring large, rich violet-blue blossoms adorned with dark, intricate veining. A crucial biological feature of this cultivar is its sterility; it does not produce viable seeds.
