Common salvinia (Salvinia minima) is a small, floating aquatic fern belonging to the Salviniaceae family. It is distinct for its lack of true roots, relying instead on modified leaves that hang submerged in the water to absorb nutrients directly from the environment.

The plant is native to tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas. Due to its rapid growth rate and high adaptability, it has been introduced to various parts of the world, where it thrives in calm, nutrient-rich bodies of water, occasionally becoming a management challenge for local ecosystems.

Botanically, the plant is characterized by its small, rounded leaves covered in microscopic hairs that exhibit superhydrophobic properties. These hairs trap a layer of air, providing buoyancy and protection against waterlogging, which allows the plant to stay afloat continuously.

In terms of cultivation, common salvinia requires high light intensity and stable temperatures between 20°C and 30°C. It is highly efficient at nutrient uptake, making it a valuable species for phytoremediation. However, it is sensitive to water movement and will quickly degrade if exposed to turbulent flow or low humidity.

The primary economic and environmental applications of this culture include its use in wastewater treatment systems and as a decorative or functional species in closed-loop aquaculture. Despite its benefits, growers must implement strict maintenance routines, such as manual thinning, to prevent the dense mats from depleting oxygen levels in the water.
