The origin and range of this plant are quite broad, spanning across Eurasia and parts of Africa. It typically colonizes habitats such as rice paddies, wet meadows, and the shores of stagnant water bodies. Its ability to tolerate varying water depths makes it a common feature in wetlands and irrigation networks.

Botanically, this species is defined by its small stature, usually growing between 5 and 30 centimeters in height. It lacks rhizomes, relying entirely on seed production for annual regeneration. A key identifying feature is the flower cluster, which appears as a lateral head sheltered by a long bract, giving the appearance that the stem continues beyond the inflorescence.

Regarding climate and soil, the plant prefers warm, sun-exposed locations with muddy or loamy soils. In terms of agronomy, it is often treated as a problematic weed in rice cultivation, requiring precise water management and integrated pest control strategies to suppress its population, as its seeds remain viable in the soil for years.
