The origin of Sphagnum austinii is primarily linked to cool, humid regions with oceanic influences, extending across specific parts of North America and Europe. It typically colonizes ombrotrophic peatlands where nutrient levels are extremely low and water acidity remains stable, allowing it to dominate the local ecosystem.

Botanically, it forms dense, compact carpets with a distinct morphology suited for moisture absorption. Its cells contain a high density of hyalocysts, which act as natural water reservoirs. This structural efficiency is the reason why this specific species is sought after for potting mixes, as it maintains oxygen levels while keeping moisture available to plant roots.

Cultivation requirements for Sphagnum austinii demand precise moisture management and shade. Unlike traditional crops, it does not require standard fertilizers; in fact, mineral nutrients can be detrimental to its growth.
