The native range of this species covers the temperate and subarctic regions of the Northern Hemisphere. It thrives primarily in nutrient-poor, waterlogged habitats, such as raised bogs and heathlands. It is characterized by its remarkable water-holding capacity, which allows it to survive in environments where moisture availability might otherwise be limiting.
Botanically, it features tightly packed clusters of branches with leaves composed of specialized hyaline cells capable of storing vast amounts of water. As a non-vascular plant, it lacks roots and relies on the direct absorption of water and atmospheric nutrients through its surface. Its growth rate is generally slow, requiring specific environmental conditions to maintain its structural integrity.
Cultivation requires adherence to strict horticultural parameters. The medium must remain acidic (pH 3.0–4.5), and the moss should only be watered with deionized, distilled, or rainwater, as minerals and heavy metals are toxic to the plant. It prefers high humidity and bright, indirect light, avoiding direct heat which can cause rapid desiccation and browning of the tissues.
