Description

The branched oyster mushroom (Pleurotus cornucopiae) is a highly valued edible fungus belonging to the family Pleurotaceae. It is distinguished by its unique funnel-shaped caps that resemble a horn, which often grow in dense clusters on a common branched stalk, providing an aesthetically pleasing and productive harvest.

Originating from the temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere, this species is naturally found growing on deciduous hardwood trees, particularly elm and oak. As a saprotrophic fungus, it plays a vital role in forest ecosystems by decomposing woody debris, a trait that is replicated in modern commercial mushroom farming.

Cultivation requires a well-prepared lignocellulosic substrate, such as wheat straw or hardwood sawdust. The substrate must be pasteurized to eliminate competing fungi and bacteria. The incubation phase is crucial, requiring a dark, temperature-controlled environment ranging from 20°C to 25°C until the mycelium fully colonizes the substrate.

To induce fruiting, the environment must shift to include higher humidity levels (85–90%) and a significant decrease in temperature, often between 15°C and 18°C. Fresh air exchange is essential to prevent the buildup of CO2, which can cause malformation of the caps. Additionally, light is necessary for the development of healthy, firm fruit bodies.

Common issues in cultivation include outbreaks of Trichoderma mold, which usually stems from improper pasteurization of the growing medium. Pests, specifically fungus gnats and mites, can also compromise crops. Success in commercial production depends on strict hygiene protocols, monitoring of humidity levels, and careful harvesting techniques to preserve the longevity of the substrate block.
