Acrocordia

Description

Acrocordia (Latin: Acrocordia) is a genus of fungi that predominantly exist as lichenized organisms. In agronomy, they are classified as epiphytes that colonize the bark of trees and shrubs. While often considered harmless, a significant accumulation of these organisms indicates that the tree is in a weakened state or that the orchard microclimate has become excessively humid and shaded.

Biologically, Acrocordia consists of fungal hyphae living in symbiosis with algae. They do not feed directly on the host tree's sap, but they act as a physical barrier. By covering the bark, they interfere with the natural gas exchange processes of the tree through the lenticels, which can ultimately lead to a decline in tree vigor over a long period if the infestation is heavy.

The primary hosts for Acrocordia are fruit trees with rough or mature bark, such as apples, pears, plums, and cherries. The infection is most prevalent in neglected orchards where canopy density prevents proper airflow. Trees that have existing bark damage or are under stress due to poor nutrition or drought are significantly more prone to colonization by these lichens.

The symptoms of colonization are characterized by the appearance of crust-like growths, spots, or patches on the trunk and structural branches. These can range in color from gray to greenish-brown. While the lichen itself is not a direct pathogen, its presence serves as a visual indicator of poor orchard maintenance and an environment that is potentially conducive to secondary fungal pathogens and overwintering insect pests.

Effective management and prevention of Acrocordia require a holistic approach to tree health:

  • Pruning branches to increase light penetration and airflow through the canopy.
  • Mechanical removal of lichen crusts using wire brushes or scrapers during wet, dormant seasons.
  • Applying preventive sprays such as iron sulfate or copper-based fungicides to inhibit growth.
  • Painting trunks with specialized lime-wash solutions to discourage future settlement of spores.
  • Ensuring proper soil nutrition and irrigation to keep trees robust and resistant to environmental stress.
