Romagnesi's mushroom (Agaricus romagnesii) is identified as a competitive fungus within commercial mushroom production environments. While it is not a primary pathogen of traditional field crops, in mushroom farming, it acts as a significant biological contaminant that competes directly with Agaricus bisporus for nutrients and growth substrate.

The agent is a naturally occurring saprotrophic fungus that often infiltrates mushroom houses via airborne spores or contaminated substrate components. Its presence signals a breakdown in the sterilization protocols required for the professional cultivation of edible mushrooms.

This fungus typically impacts commercial substrates, including straw-based composts and peat-based casing layers. The development of the fungus is favored by consistent humidity and temperatures ranging between 18 and 24 degrees Celsius, which are unfortunately also optimal for the targeted cultivated mushrooms.

Symptoms of infestation include the rapid spread of aggressive mycelium followed by the emergence of characteristic fruit bodies. These bodies often display a brownish-scaled cap, distinct from the white or creamy appearance of standard button mushrooms, making them easy to identify during the harvesting phase.

To manage and prevent the spread of Romagnesi's mushroom, producers should implement the following protocols:

  • Strict heat treatment of all substrate materials.
  • Rigorous sanitization of harvesting equipment and surfaces.
  • Installation of HEPA filters in ventilation systems to block spores.
  • Systematic removal and destruction of infected blocks to prevent further contamination.
