Potato cyst nematode

Globodera rostochiensis

Description

The Potato cyst nematode (Globodera rostochiensis), often referred to as the golden nematode, is a highly destructive soil-borne pest. As a quarantine organism, it causes a disease known as potato cyst nematodiasis. The pathogen survives in the soil as dormant cysts, which contain viable eggs and larvae, allowing the infestation to persist for over a decade without host plants.

This parasite primarily targets crops within the Solanaceae family, with potatoes being the most susceptible host. Tomatoes and eggplants can also be affected. The nematodes attach themselves to the root system, causing damage that inhibits the plant's ability to absorb essential nutrients and water, ultimately leading to significant yield losses, often ranging from moderate to catastrophic.

Symptoms of an infestation are often observed in patches within a field. Plants may show signs of yellowing, stunted growth, and premature wilting, particularly during hot and dry spells. The root system often appears underdeveloped or bushy due to excessive secondary root growth in response to nematode feeding. Close inspection of roots during the summer may reveal small, bead-like white, yellow, or brown cysts.

The development of the nematode is highly dependent on soil temperature and the presence of host root exudates, which trigger egg hatching. Spread occurs primarily through the movement of infested soil attached to farm machinery, footwear, or contaminated seed tubers. Because of its extreme persistence in the environment, limiting the movement of soil from infested zones is critical for containment.

Integrated management is the most effective approach to control this pest. Key strategies include:

  • Planting resistant potato varieties that prevent nematode reproduction.
  • Implementing long-term crop rotations with non-host crops like cereals or forage grasses.
  • Strict sanitation protocols to ensure equipment is cleaned of all soil particles.
  • Regular soil testing to monitor nematode population densities in high-risk areas.
