While many species of this genus are saprotrophic, under specific stress conditions, they can act as opportunistic parasites, colonizing and degrading the structural integrity of weakened trees and woody shrubs.
The host range of this fungus primarily includes forest trees and ornamental woody plants. It typically targets trees that have been compromised by environmental stress, such as drought, nutrient deficiency, or mechanical injuries. Once the tree's natural defense mechanisms are weakened, the fungal hyphae penetrate the vascular system and proceed to colonize the heartwood and sapwood.
