Bacterial soft rot, scientifically categorized under the term Ahlum waterborne, is a devastating disease caused by soil-borne pathogens. It primarily targets fleshy vegetables and root crops, leading to significant economic losses for farmers worldwide during both the growing season and storage.

The causative agents are diverse bacteria that produce pectolytic enzymes. These enzymes dissolve the middle lamella of plant cells, causing the tissue to lose structural integrity and collapse into a soft, watery, and often foul-smelling mass. This is a classic bacterial necrotrophic process.

Common hosts for this disease include carrots, potatoes, onions, and various brassicas. The infection typically starts from wounds or natural openings in the plant, such as lenticels or root hairs, especially when the plant is under stress from waterlogging or anaerobic conditions.

Optimal conditions for disease development include high humidity, water-saturated soil, and temperatures ranging from 20°C to 30°C. These conditions facilitate rapid bacterial multiplication and movement through soil moisture or surface films, allowing the infection to spread quickly across an entire field or storage bin.

Management strategies focus on sanitation and environmental control. Key practices include:

  • Improving soil drainage to prevent water accumulation
  • Implementing long-term crop rotation cycles
  • Proper curing of harvested crops before storage
  • Maintaining well-ventilated storage conditions with low humidity
Chemical control is generally ineffective; therefore, preventing physical damage to crops during harvesting is the most critical preventative measure.
