Aleurodiscus phragmitis is a species of basidiomycete fungus within the Stereaceae family that primarily colonizes the common reed, Phragmites australis. In the context of plant pathology, it acts as a weak parasite or a saprotroph, often occupying stems and leaves that are already under environmental stress or in a state of senescence.
The pathogen produces distinct resupinate (crust-like) basidiocarps, which typically appear as whitish, cream, or pale ochre patches on the surface of the plant substrate. These fungal structures allow the organism to efficiently produce and disperse spores, ensuring its survival and spread throughout host populations during favorable climatic conditions.
The primary hosts are species of the genus Phragmites. The fungus thrives in habitats characterized by constant high humidity and stagnant water, such as marshlands, wetlands, and dense reed beds. These environments facilitate the germination of spores and the development of dense mycelial networks that can eventually degrade the plant structure.
Symptoms of infection include the appearance of localized fungal growth on the stem surface, which causes significant damage to the plant's epidermis and cortical tissue. As the fungus consumes nutrients and disrupts cellular functions, the affected areas become necrotic and brittle.
