The primary symptom is the gradual decomposition of the internal wood structure, often manifesting as soft, discolored, or spongy wood. As the mycelium advances, the tree loses its structural integrity, which can eventually lead to wind-throw or trunk collapse during severe storms.
Deciduous trees are the main hosts for this pathogen. It typically gains entry through entry points such as broken branches, pruning wounds, or deep fissures in the bark caused by environmental stress. Older trees are particularly susceptible due to the accumulation of long-term injuries.
Development is heavily influenced by high humidity levels and favorable ambient temperatures. The fungus thrives in stagnant air environments where moisture accumulates on wood surfaces. Spore dispersal is driven by wind and physical contact, allowing the fungus to spread across orchard or forest stands.
Effective management requires proactive arboricultural practices. It is crucial to monitor tree health annually and treat any surface wounds immediately. Removing deadwood and ensuring proper sanitation prevents the buildup of inoculum, thereby protecting the overall vitality of the grove or garden.
