Amylomycosis is a plant disease caused by fungi of the genus Amylomyces, specifically the species Amylomyces rouxii. This pathogen is particularly recognized for its ability to decompose starchy substrates, causing significant spoilage in various agricultural commodities. It is a critical concern for post-harvest management and storage facilities globally.

The primary hosts of this pathogen include major cereal crops such as corn, wheat, and rice. The fungus is capable of thriving in nutrient-rich environments, making stored grain, flour, and industrial processed agricultural products highly susceptible. Its impact is most frequently observed in large-scale storage silos where bulk materials create conditions suitable for fungal colonization.

Visual symptoms of Amylomycosis include the development of dense, fuzzy mycelial growth on the surface of grains. As the infection progresses, the tissues exhibit softening, significant discoloration, and the development of a distinct, musty, or fermented odor. The structural integrity of the starch granules is compromised, rendering the affected material unsuitable for commercial sale or feed purposes.

The development of Amylomyces is governed by moisture and temperature levels. The fungus thrives in environments with high relative humidity (above 75%) and temperatures between 25°C and 35°C. These conditions trigger rapid spore germination and mycelial spread. Poor ventilation and the absence of climate control in storage units act as the primary catalysts for the widespread outbreak of this fungal disease.

Mitigation strategies focus on strict environmental control to prevent fungal growth and protect the quality of the harvested crops:

  • Maintaining grain moisture levels below 14% to inhibit fungal biological activity.
  • Implementing efficient aeration systems to eliminate moisture pockets and temperature spikes.
