Description
Apricot ringpox is a serious viral disease caused by the Plum pox virus (PPV), also known as Sharka disease. It is recognized as one of the most devastating viral infections affecting stone fruit species worldwide, impacting both crop quality and tree longevity.
The primary hosts of this virus are apricots, plums, peaches, and other species within the Prunus genus. Due to its systemic nature, the virus colonizes the entire plant, moving through the phloem and causing long-term physiological stress that gradually weakens the tree's immune system.
Symptoms are distinct and usually appear during the growing season. Leaves often display chlorotic ring patterns or vein banding, while the fruits exhibit characteristic bumpy, deformed surfaces with dark, sunken rings. Inside, the flesh often shows necrotic spots, significantly degrading the marketability of the produce.
Transmission occurs through two main vectors: the use of infected grafting scions or nursery stock, and insect vectors, particularly various species of aphids. These insects transmit the virus in a non-persistent manner while feeding, allowing for rapid spread within and between orchards.
There is no curative treatment for trees infected with Apricot ringpox. Management strategies focus entirely on exclusion and eradication: obtaining certified virus-free nursery stock, implementing strict sanitation protocols, managing aphid populations through integrated pest management, and promptly removing and destroying infected trees to serve as a quarantine barrier.
