The Archaeosporaceae family belongs to a group of beneficial soil fungi known as arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF). They are not plant pathogens, but rather essential symbionts that foster healthy plant growth by establishing a mutualistic relationship with the roots of the vast majority of agricultural crops.
The biological mechanism behind this symbiosis involves the fungus extending its hyphae into the soil, acting as a secondary root system. Within the plant root cells, the fungi develop branched structures called arbuscules, where they exchange phosphate, nitrogen, and micronutrients absorbed from the soil for carbohydrates synthesized by the plant.
